Low cost airlines have become an important force in the Chinese air transport market in recent years. Their growth has been catapulted by the introduction in February 2014 of the Guideline Opinions of the Civil Aviation Administration of China on the Promotion of the Development of Low Cost Airlines.

The development of low cost airlines in Chongqing has especially been noticeable. At present, the number of passengers carried by low cost airlines accounts for approximately 20 percent of the total passenger throughput of Chongqing Airport. The low cost airlines including West Air, Spring Airlines, Spring Airlines Japan, Lucky Air, Thai Lion Air, Lion Air, AirAsia, AirAsia X already establish their operations in Chongqing. Chongqing is expected to enter into a new stage of development with the implementation of the national strategies including “One Belt, One Road”, “Yangtze River Economic Belt”, and the Great Development in West Provinces. There are currently two terminals and two runways at Chongqing Airport with a new terminal area and a new runway being expected to be launched within this year. The connectivity of Chongqing Airport has been increasing in recent years with 258 routes leading to 158 cities. Of these, there are 60 international routes leading to 47 destinations in Southeast Asia, Japan, South Korea, the Middle East, Europe, North America and Oceania.
